His demands have left the Bruins in a tough spot, as they weigh the value of their 24-year-old netminder against their salary cap and long-term team needs. With Swayman potentially seeking more than $8.5 million annually, the Bruins’ decision to bring in an experienced replacement raises questions about Swayman’s future with the franchise.
Earlier this offseason, the Bruins traded veteran goaltender Linus Ullmark, a move many believed solidified Swayman as Boston’s goalie of the future. However, Swayman’s refusal to settle for a below-market deal has created uncertainty. According to NHL insiders, the Bruins’ acquisition of this new veteran netminder might indicate a shift in their goaltending strategy.
NHL analyst Chris Johnston shared his thoughts on the matter, noting the reluctance of NHL teams to pay goaltenders based on potential, a practice more common with forwards and defensemen. “We see young players getting massive contracts based on their upside after playing less than 100 games. But with goaltenders, teams hesitate to make long-term commitments based on potential alone,” Johnston said.
If Swayman lands the deal he’s reportedly seeking, it could reset the market for goaltenders across the league. NHL teams are typically cautious about paying high salaries to goaltenders without a substantial track record of success, but Swayman’s negotiations could challenge that trend.
