Jerod Mayo, head coach of the New England Patriots, has confirmed the devastating news that 23-year-old rising star Layden Robinson is out with a career-threatening injury. Additionally, Mayo has made it clear that, despite increasing pressure, there will be no change at quarterback as the team continues to back Jacoby Brissett amid growing calls to play rookie Drake Maye.
Following the Patriots’ 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, where Brissett struggled again, Mayo reiterated his support for the veteran quarterback. “As of this point, Jacoby is our starting quarterback,” Mayo stated during the post-game press conference. “He’s been a great leader, and we’re going to evaluate every position after watching the film.”
Brissett, who has had a tough start to the season, completed 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards, a touchdown, and an interception — a pick-six by Fred Warner. Despite the struggles, Mayo praised Brissett’s resilience. “Jacoby is mentally and physically tough. He took some huge hits and kept getting back up. I would never call him skittish,” Mayo said.
Brissett has been sacked 14 times in the last three games, which Mayo acknowledged has impacted his quarterback’s performance. However, there was no consideration to sub in rookie Drake Maye during the game, with Mayo making it clear that Maye is still “a ways away” from taking over as the starter.
As the Patriots prepare to host the Miami Dolphins in Week 5, Mayo hopes the quarterback discussion will be put to rest for the time being.
