Penguins Make Next Round of Roster Cuts, Down to 52…

Eight days into training camp, the Pittsburgh Penguins have made their second round of roster cuts, paring 11 players on Monday as they went from having three practice groups to two.

None of the latest cuts are shocking. The moves involving better prospects and/or players on the bubble will come later.

They cut 14 on Monday, including some notables: forwards Raivis Ansons (2020 fifth-round draft pick), Atley Calvert, Mathieu De St. Phalle, Sam Houde, Bennett MacArthur (trade with Tampa Bay), and Logan Pietila; and defensemen Isaac Belliveau, Justin Lee, and Mats Lindgren.

On Saturday, the Penguins returned six young players to their junior clubs. Tuesday, the team returned Tanner Howe (2024 second-round) and Finn Harding (2024 seventh-round) to their junior clubs.

The Penguins play their second preseason game, and preseason home opener, Tuesday against Buffalo. The Sabres, with a roster stocked with NHL talent, downed a prospect-laden Penguins team 7-3 Saturday night. We expect to have the Penguins lineup for that game later Monday.
