The Boston Bruins have officially announced the signing of General Manager Don Sweeney to a multi-year contract extension. Bruins President Cam Neely shared the news on June 27, confirming that Sweeney will continue his role overseeing the team’s operations.
“We are thrilled to extend Don Sweeney’s contract,” said Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs. “Under his leadership, the Bruins have consistently been one of the most successful teams in the NHL, maintaining a strong playoff presence year after year. While we remain focused on our ultimate goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Boston, Don’s dedication and excellence on and off the ice make us confident that we are on the right path.”
Bruins President Cam Neely echoed Jacobs’ sentiments, praising Sweeney’s work ethic and commitment to success. “I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Don for over a decade, and his relentless drive to improve every facet of the organization is unmatched. He is determined to put the Bruins in the best possible position to win every season. We look forward to continuing our journey toward another championship together.”
Sweeney, who has served as the Bruins’ general manager since the 2015-16 season, has built an impressive resume during his tenure. Under his management, the Bruins have recorded 313 wins since 2015, second only to the Washington Capitals’ Brian MacLellan in that span. Sweeney also boasts a .584 winning percentage, tied for seventh among NHL general managers.
The Bruins have been a constant playoff contender, securing a postseason spot in each of the last six seasons under Sweeney’s guidance. His efforts earned him the NHL’s General Manager of the Year award following the 2018-19 season when the Bruins reached the Stanley Cup Final.
Sweeney’s career with the Bruins began long before his front-office role. He joined the team’s hockey operations staff in 2006 as Director of Player Development and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2009, he was named Assistant General Manager, where he played a key role in developing the team’s prospects. In 2014, he also took on the role of General Manager for the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence.
A former player himself, Sweeney spent 16 seasons in the NHL, 15 of which were with the Bruins. Drafted by Boston in 1984, he went on to play over 1,000 games for the team, ranking among the franchise’s all-time leaders in games played, assists, and points by a defenseman.
With Sweeney’s contract now extended, the Bruins look to continue their pursuit of another Stanley Cup under his leadership. Further details on the extension and upcoming team plans are expected to be discussed at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft in July.
