Cam Newton, the legendary Auburn quarterback, didn’t hold back when criticizing Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze following the team’s disappointing loss to California. In a passionate post-game interview, Newton expressed his frustration with the Tigers’ performance and called for immediate changes, including the possible firing of Freeze.
“This loss was unacceptable,” Newton said bluntly. “We’ve got too much talent on this team to be losing like this. Hugh Freeze is supposed to be the guy to turn this program around, but after what I saw tonight, I don’t think he’s the right person for the job. He should be fired.”
The Tigers’ lackluster performance against Cal, a team they were favored to beat, left fans and alumni like Newton disheartened. Auburn’s offense struggled throughout the game, raising questions about the play-calling and overall strategy implemented by Freeze and his coaching staff.
Newton, who led Auburn to a national championship in 2010 and has since become one of the program’s most vocal supporters, didn’t mince words when expressing his disappointment. “It’s one thing to lose, but it’s another thing to look completely unprepared. This is Auburn. We have a standard. And tonight, that standard wasn’t met.”
Auburn’s fanbase has been growing restless since Freeze was hired to replace Bryan Harsin, with hopes that the new coach could bring the Tigers back to prominence. However, early season struggles, including the loss to Cal, have intensified scrutiny on Freeze and his leadership.
For now, Auburn’s football program will have to regroup and find a way to salvage the season. But with high-profile alumni like Newton publicly calling for Freeze’s dismissal, the pressure is mounting.
