As LSU football continues its 2024 season, opinions surrounding head coach Brian Kelly’s tenure have grown increasingly mixed. Despite a narrow 36-33 victory over South Carolina, the Tigers are facing significant issues, particularly on defense. Some speculate that a disconnect between Kelly and his players could be contributing to these struggles.
John Talty of CBSSports.com recently highlighted concerns about Kelly’s relationship with his team, writing, “Multiple industry sources familiar with LSU believe the on-field issues stem from a disconnect between Kelly and his players. His personality and coaching style may not resonate as effectively in Baton Rouge as it did during his time at Notre Dame.”
While such claims are difficult to verify without direct insight, Talty’s report raises valid concerns. Kelly has a reputation as a demanding coach, and while he has softened his media approach since arriving at LSU, his past abrasiveness may have lingering effects. His decision to leave Notre Dame for LSU in 2021 also still draws ire from some corners of the college football world.
At the core of the debate is whether Kelly can effectively motivate his players. He has over 300 career wins and two NCAA Division II national championships, cementing his status as a future College Football Hall of Famer. Yet, LSU’s defense remains a glaring issue. With 67 points allowed in just two games and ranking near the bottom of the SEC in total defense, LSU’s playoff aspirations seem distant.
The 2024 season hasn’t provided much solace. LSU’s defense has been inconsistent, ranking 14th out of 16 teams in the SEC, allowing 380 yards per game and tied for last in points allowed at 27 per game. The defensive line, while improved under new coordinator Blake Baker, still needs significant work to reach championship-caliber levels. The sight of linebacker Harold Perkins making strides at South Carolina is promising, but the defense overall remains a liability.
Kelly, aware of the challenges, has restructured his coaching staff and made key hires, including bringing back Bo Davis to coach the defensive line and Corey Raymond to lead the secondary. These changes have bolstered LSU’s recruiting efforts, as the Tigers currently boast the No. 3-ranked recruiting class according to On3.com. However, Kelly knows that recruiting alone won’t bring LSU back to the championship level it expects.
As the Tigers struggle to regain their national contender status, Kelly must navigate the unique pressures of coaching in the NIL era—a challenge that past LSU coaches like Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron never faced. The program’s ability to adapt to these changes will play a key role in its future success.
Ultimately, Kelly’s critics question whether his coaching style and connection with players are strong enough to bring LSU back to the pinnacle of college football. Kelly himself acknowledges the ongoing challenges, stating, “We’re still evaluating everything—what we’re coaching, how we’re coaching it, who needs to be on the field. We’ve done a deep dive into all of it.”
