The Toronto Maple Leafs might find the solution to their left-wing dilemma within their own roster.
While the Maple Leafs’ lineup appears similar to last season, they are currently facing a significant challenge with the departure of their first-line left-winger, Tyler Bertuzzi. Although Bertuzzi didn’t rack up a large number of goals last year, his advanced stats and ability to drive play were exceptional, and his absence has left a noticeable gap in the team.
Bertuzzi’s season had a tough start, with several close chances that just didn’t convert into goals. It was one of those seasons where the puck simply didn’t bounce his way, though his overall play suggested he could have easily netted 30 goals if things had gone differently. However, with Bertuzzi now part of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Leafs must look ahead.
Currently, the Leafs’ top-six left-wing spots are occupied by Matthew Knies and Bobby McMann. Knies had an impressive rookie season, complementing Auston Matthews with his relentless effort in the corners, making him a likely candidate to stay in that role. McMann, who earned a two-year contract extension after a strong start last season, is also in the mix.
However, despite his 15 goals in 56 NHL games, McMann’s scoring was streaky, with seven goals coming in a five-game span in February. If he hits a cold streak, McMann could find himself relegated to the fourth line or even sent back to the AHL.
Given the uncertainty surrounding McMann, the Leafs need to address their left-wing situation. Fortunately, they may have viable options within their existing lineup. Here are four internal candidates who could step up to fill the left-wing void.
