The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list due to lower back inflammation.
Hayes, a Gold Glove winner last season, has struggled at the plate this year. The 27-year-old is hitting just .233 with four home runs and 25 RBIs across 96 games. His OPS has dropped to .573, marking the lowest of his career and a significant decline from his .762 OPS in 2023.
To fill Hayes’ spot, the Pirates have called up outfielder/first baseman Billy McKinney.
McKinney has been impressive this season, batting .285 with five home runs and 18 RBIs while playing for Class A Greensboro and Triple-A Indianapolis.
McKinney, who was acquired by the Pirates in a trade with the New York Yankees last December, has experience at the major league level. He has played in 311 MLB games with six different teams, posting a .209 batting average with 34 homers and 86 RBIs.
In addition to McKinney’s call-up, the Pirates have also recalled reliever Hunter Stratton from Indianapolis and designated reliever Ryder Ryan for assignment. Outfielder Josh Palacios has completed his rehab assignment and has been sent back to Triple-A.
