Evgeni Malkin recently shared some insightful thoughts with RG.org about the significance of staying with one team for an entire career. In an exclusive interview, Malkin emphasized the deep connection between Sidney Crosby and the city of Pittsburgh.
“Pittsburgh is Crosby. Crosby is Pittsburgh. It would be unimaginable for the people of Pittsburgh if he ever left the team,” Malkin said. Although Crosby could have signed his next contract over a month ago, Malkin remains unconcerned about the delay. “Anything can happen, even the unexpected. But before I signed my current contract, we talked, and Sid told me that the Penguins are us: me, him, [Kris] Letang. I signed my contract, and I’m sure he’ll make the same choice.”
Malkin also reflected on his own journey, admitting that while he can’t picture himself playing for another team now, that wasn’t always the case. “When I signed my current contract two years ago, I had different thoughts. The negotiations were tough, and a lot of players switch teams—even Wayne Gretzky. Steven Stamkos just did it. There aren’t many players who spend their entire careers with one team. Now, I can’t see myself leaving, but two years ago, it was a possibility.”
Reports indicate that Crosby played a crucial role in convincing Malkin to extend his contract during those challenging negotiations. Malkin’s words, “he told me that the Penguins are us: me, him, [Kris] Letang,” highlight the bond Crosby shares with his core teammates and the organization. Malkin is now signed for two more seasons, while Letang’s contract runs for four.
Malkin prepares for the upcoming season, his focus remains on staying healthy and contributing to the team. “I’ve played 82 games twice, and both times, we just missed the playoffs. I’ve thought about that a lot. The key is preparing for the season properly. I want to extend my career as long as possible. I still have the passion for the game and love stepping on the ice for every game. It gets tougher every year, but my love for hockey hasn’t faded. My goal is to play all 82 games again next season and make the playoffs. I hope to avoid any major injuries.”
As Crosby’s birthday approaches on August 7th, fans are eagerly awaiting news of a new contract for the Penguins’ captain, which is reportedly close to being finalized. While there hasn’t been any rush from either the Penguins or Crosby to finalize the deal, with training camp just weeks away, it seems likely that the contract will be signed soon, avoiding the daily questions about his future with the team.
Malkin, for one, doesn’t seem worried. He’s confident that Crosby will sign a new contract and continue his career with the team he’s become synonymous with.
