Good News: Minnesota Twins Announced the Signing of Experienced Reliever to Replcace the 27-year-old Star…

The Minnesota Twins have signed former St. Louis Cardinals right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos to a minor league deal, assigning him to Triple-A St. Paul, the team announced on Tuesday. Gallegos, who turns 33 this month, was recently designated for assignment by the Cardinals and chose free agency after clearing waivers. Now, he seeks to revive his career with the Twins.

Gallegos debuted in the MLB with the Yankees in 2017 and was traded to St. Louis the following summer. In 2019, he became a key bullpen asset for the Cardinals, posting a 2.31 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 74 innings. He continued his strong performance in the following seasons, with a 3.02 ERA in 2021 and a 3.05 ERA in 2022, consistently delivering impressive numbers from 2019-22.

However, last season saw a decline in Gallegos’ performance, with a 4.42 ERA and 11 home runs allowed in 55 innings. This year’s start was even rougher, as he posted a career-worst 6.53 ERA, allowing 24 hits, 10 walks, and 6 homers in 20.2 innings before being designated for assignment.

Known for his effective two-pitch combination of a fastball and a sharp slider, Gallegos occasionally mixed in a changeup. His elite swing-and-miss ability primarily relied on his heater and slider. However, this season, his fastball velocity dropped to 92 miles per hour, down from his career norm of 94 mph.

The Twins will evaluate Gallegos in St. Paul to see if he can regain his previous form. With a career 3.49 ERA, 396 strikeouts, and 45 saves in 335.2 innings, he has the potential to be a valuable asset for the Twins’ bullpen if he performs well with the Saints.

Farmer Begins Rehab Assignment

Veteran Twins infielder Kyle Farmer is starting a rehab assignment with the Saints on Tuesday. Farmer struggled at the start of the season before his injury, hitting .189 with no home runs and a .557 OPS in 151 plate appearances. His future role with the Twins is uncertain, especially with the eventual return of Carlos Correa to an infield that includes Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, Willi Castro, Jose Miranda, and Carlos Santana.
