In the midst of the NBA offseason, player movement has significantly slowed down. Most major free agents have either re-signed with their current teams or agreed to new deals elsewhere for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Despite the slowdown in free agency, there remains potential for blockbuster trades before the new season kicks off. One of the biggest names currently on the trade block is Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz, with several teams vying for his acquisition this summer.
Over the past few weeks, Markkanen has been frequently mentioned as a potential trade target, with the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs emerging as the primary contenders for his services.
The Warriors are looking to rebound after losing Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, aiming for at least one more championship run with Stephen Curry at the helm. Meanwhile, the Spurs are seeking another star to complement Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Spurs are prepared to offer multiple first-round picks along with Keldon Johnson, positioning them as the frontrunners to secure Markkanen, as reported by Legion Hoops.
“The Spurs have shown a willingness to part with multiple first-round picks, as well as Keldon Johnson, in a potential deal for Lauri Markkanen,” Siegel stated.

Unless another team presents an irresistible offer to the Jazz, the competition for Markkanen appears to be between the Warriors and Spurs.
Acquiring Markkanen would significantly boost the Spurs’ rebuilding efforts around Wembanyama, while the Warriors would enhance their title prospects by adding him to their lineup alongside Curry and Draymond Green.
