San Antonio’s first-overall pick has been shut down for the summer after injuring his wrist against Portland.
The San Antonio Spurs’ first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Stephon Castle, has impressed basketball fans with his Summer League performance. The UCONN product averaged 22 points and 4 assists in his three games, earning praise from Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who anticipated early playing time for Castle with the NBA team. However, Spurs fans will now have to wait to see more of Castle, as he has been ruled out for the remainder of the Summer League due to a wrist sprain.

Castle’s Injury Details
Castle sustained the injury after a hard fall late in San Antonio’s 83-77 win against the Portland Trail Blazers. Although he continued to play after the fall, he was seen holding his wrist. The Spurs are being cautious to prevent further injury, similar to how they handled Victor Wembanyama last season, who only played in two games before being shut down for the rest of the summer. Given Popovich’s praise and Castle’s unfortunate fall, the decision to rest him likely stems from seeing enough potential in the rookie.

Spurs Continue Without Castle
Despite Castle’s absence, the Summer Spurs managed to win their first game without him, defeating the Atlanta Hawks and their first-overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher, 79-76. Spurs fans can still look forward to watching second-round pick Harrison Ingram for the rest of the Summer League. Additionally, G League players like Jamaree Bouyea and David Duke Jr. will continue to be featured, providing plenty of basketball action.
Upcoming Games
The Spurs will face the New Orleans Pelicans in their next Summer League contest on July 16th.
