The Pittsburgh Penguins secured a significant boost to their defensive lineup with the signing of Harrison Brunicke to a three-year entry-level contract. This signing follows the Penguins’ two second-round picks in the 2024 NHL Draft, both of whom are now officially on board.
While the terms of the contract were not disclosed, the maximum salary for such deals is currently set at $975,000 per season, according to NHL.com.
Brunicke, 18, was selected 44th overall, the first of the Penguins’ two second-round picks. The second pick was Tanner Howe, chosen 46th overall.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 196 pounds, Brunicke is a right-handed defenseman drafted from the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. Born in South Africa, he would become the first skater from his country to play in the NHL, following in the footsteps of goalie Olaf Kolzig, the first South African-born player in the league.
Last season, Brunicke tallied 10 goals and 21 points in 49 games. He received positive reviews from Pittsburgh Hockey Now after his performance at the Penguins’ recent development camp at the UPMC Lemieux Complex.
Unless Brunicke makes the NHL roster immediately, he is not eligible to turn pro for another two years. His entry-level contract will slide until then, ensuring he remains a crucial part of the Penguins’ future plans.
