SAD NEWS:Leaf Confirmed the Departure of Another Experienced Top Star…

Toronto Maple Leafs winger Nick Robertson has faced a challenging journey to the NHL. At 22, he’s dealt with significant injuries that have hampered his career, and even when healthy, he hasn’t found a proper fit as a top-six forward in Toronto. Reports emerged last week that Robertson has requested a trade, indicating he doesn’t see a long-term future with the Leafs. With frustrations reaching a boiling point, Robertson now seeks an exit from the organization that drafted him 53rd overall in 2019. If the Leafs and Robertson can’t reconcile, where could he be traded to benefit both the player and the teams involved? Here are three potential destinations:

1. San Jose Sharks

Robertson, a California native, could find a fitting home with the Sharks, who need help in various areas. San Jose could offer a second-round draft pick – the Leafs don’t have their own second-rounder until 2027 – and a mid-tier prospect in exchange for Robertson. This deal would free up cap space for the Leafs, allowing them to make other roster adjustments. Meanwhile, the Sharks would gain a young talent to complement rising stars like Will Smith and 2024 No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini. Playing closer to home would likely appeal to Robertson, and the Leafs wouldn’t have to worry about facing him frequently as they would if he joined a divisional rival.

2. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets are in the early stages of another major rebuild, creating opportunities within their roster. If Columbus GM Don Waddell trades veteran forward Boone Jenner, a top-six spot could open up for Robertson. The pressure would be significantly lower in a quieter hockey market like Ohio. Toronto could receive a high draft pick and a decent prospect in return. Robertson would get a fresh start in Columbus, and the Leafs would bolster their draft capital while playing the Blue Jackets only a few times per season. This trade benefits both teams, with Columbus gaining a valuable long-term asset in Robertson.

3. Vegas Golden Knights

Despite currently being over the salary cap ceiling, the Golden Knights, led by proactive GM Kelly McCrimmon, could make a move for Robertson. Adding Robertson would enhance Vegas’s middle-six forwards. The Leafs could be satisfied with one of the Golden Knights’ second-round picks (they have all their second-rounders for the next three drafts). Robertson would be closer to home than in Toronto, and the Leafs might accept a decent prospect instead of a draft pick. This move allows Vegas to add a potential 20-25 goal scorer without losing anyone from their NHL roster, while Toronto opens up a roster spot for a youngster like Easton Cowan or Fraser Minten. It’s a win-win situation for both teams, and these are the types of deals often made in the NHL
