The Miami Heat are actively pursuing a high-profile offseason acquisition, with Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan as a prime target. DeRozan remains one of the few notable free agents still on the market.
However, the Heat’s limited cap space makes signing DeRozan as an unrestricted free agent unlikely. Instead, acquiring the six-time All-Star will probably require a sign-and-trade deal with the Bulls, a prospect that has recently gained traction.
Potential Trade: Caleb Martin to Bulls for DeMar DeRozan?
League insiders Jake Fischer and Dan Devine recently discussed the possibility of DeRozan joining the Heat. On the latest episode of the No Cap Room podcast, it was suggested that Miami might send Caleb Martin to Chicago to facilitate the DeRozan trade (h/t NBACentral on X, formerly Twitter):
“DeMar DeRozan is arguably the biggest piece still on the board. There’s definitely been some talk of a potential double sign-and-trade of him to Miami and Caleb Martin back to Chicago. I have not confirmed this as a serious discussion, but people in the league have definitely talked about it.”
Like DeRozan, Martin is also a free agent and has yet to secure a new contract with his current team. According to the report, Martin could be the key piece in a potential trade between the Heat and the Bulls. This scenario would allow Miami to land the big-name star they have been seeking, while DeRozan secures his future outside of Chicago.
