Mavericks Join List of Potential Klay Thompson Suitors
The likelihood of Klay Thompson returning to the Golden State Warriors is becoming increasingly uncertain. While the Warriors are exploring a potential trade for Paul George, two Western Conference contenders, the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks, are now considering the four-time NBA champion as a valuable addition to their rosters.
Thompson’s market value remains uncertain, but his exceptional shooting skills are sure to attract interest. Despite what was considered a down year, the five-time All-Star still managed to shoot an impressive 38.7 percent from behind the 3-point line last season. He could serve as an intriguing supplementary scoring option for teams looking to elevate their game.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic, both with financial flexibility, have already been mentioned as potential destinations for Thompson. Now, the list of interested teams appears to be growing. The Nuggets are preparing contingency plans in case one of their key role players leaves.
“If the Nuggets lose free-agent-to-be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has decided to decline his player option and enter the market, a league source said Denver has pegged Thompson as a possible replacement,” reported The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Anthony Slater.
Dallas is also motivated to strengthen its roster after winning the Western Conference this past postseason. The Mavericks are keenly aware of the competition in the grueling Western Conference and are looking to improve their outside shooting as one of their offseason priorities.
“Improving their outside shooting is one of the Mavericks’ offseason priorities after they made the third trip in franchise history to the NBA Finals,” wrote NBA correspondent Marc Stein in his substack.
Klay Thompson Might Be Slipping Further Out of Warriors’ Grasp
Golden State continues to emphasize its goal of re-signing Thompson. He is a crucial part of Warriors franchise history and is closely linked with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and head coach Steve Kerr. Losing Thompson would be a significant blow to the organization and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Kerr remains hopeful that a new deal can be reached before Thompson is picked up by the 76ers, Magic, Nuggets, Mavericks, or another team.
“I want him back desperately,” Kerr told Jim Rome earlier in the week. “We will have our conversations, and he’s got to make whatever decision he makes, but we really want him back. He’s Klay Thompson.”
The coming weeks will be crucial as Thompson’s future in the NBA unfolds, with multiple teams eager to secure the sharpshooter’s talents for the upcoming season.
