Rangers Eye Gritty Toronto Forward to Solve First-Line Issues
The New York Rangers are in dire need of a right winger to complement their first line. Last season, Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad struggled to find a consistent linemate, making this summer’s free agency crucial for strengthening their top offensive unit.
Fans are divided on which players the Rangers should pursue once the market opens in July, but one thing is clear — the team needs a gritty, fast-paced grinder to match Kreider and Zibanejad’s styles.
Tyler Bertuzzi Hits Free Agency in July
Tyler Bertuzzi, a 29-year-old winger, has played for three different teams over the last two seasons. He spent most of the 2023-24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and is now set to test free agency following another early playoff exit.
Bertuzzi had a solid season with the Maple Leafs, scoring 43 points in 80 games and adding four points in seven postseason matchups.
There are several reasons the Rangers should consider signing Bertuzzi. Of his 43 points in the regular season, 37 (86%) were at even strength. The Rangers struggled to produce points at 5v5, particularly on the first line. Adding Bertuzzi to Kreider and Zibanejad’s unit could ignite their even-strength scoring.
Additionally, Bertuzzi’s skill set perfectly complements what the first line lacks. Kreider excels at net-front presence while Zibanejad has a lethal shot, but neither is strong in winning puck battles along the boards or making solid defensive plays. Bertuzzi’s physical, grinding style makes him an ideal fit to fill these gaps on the Rangers’ first line.
What Would It Take to Sign Bertuzzi?
Bertuzzi is an unrestricted free agent, so the Rangers don’t need to trade for his signing rights. Once the market opens in July, they simply need to make him an offer.
Bertuzzi is coming off a one-year deal worth $5.5 million, the highest annual average value (AAV) he’s earned to date. He’s likely to seek a similar figure this summer and, after moving between teams over the past two seasons, will probably look for a long-term deal as well.
At 29, a multi-year contract would be a reasonable investment for the Rangers. A three-year deal worth around $5 million per year seems ideal, but Bertuzzi will hold significant leverage in negotiations with multiple teams interested in signing him.
