The Martian’s rehab assignment has concluded, though he’ll remain with Scranton for now.

The Yankees announced today that they’ve reinstated Jasson Domínguez from his rehab assignment and subsequently optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the club placed Jon Berti on the 60-day IL.

This move involves some roster management considerations. After his rehab assignment ended, the Yankees had to decide between adding Domínguez to the active roster or sending him to Triple-A. If Domínguez spends 20 days in the minors, it will use up one of his three remaining options. However, if he establishes himself in the majors in the next couple of years as expected, this won’t be a significant issue. From Domínguez’s perspective, staying in Triple-A means he won’t accrue any service time.

Domínguez, who underwent Tommy John surgery at the end of last season, has shown impressive health and performance during his rehab stint. He has excelled across three minor-league levels, hitting .368/.415/.658 with six home runs. In eight major league games in 2023, he slashed .258/.303/.677.

If Domínguez maintains anything close to this level of performance, he’ll likely be the team’s first call-up should an injury occur in the current outfield. The Yankees’ top three outfielders are secure, with Giancarlo Stanton primarily occupying the DH spot, but it only takes one health issue to bring Domínguez back into the mix. The Yankees will hope Domínguez continues to excel and force his way back into the lineup.
