Logan Evans recently received an unexpected phone call that could fast-track him to the Major Leagues. Seattle’s president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, proposed a transition to the bullpen at Double-A Arkansas, less than a year after the Mariners selected Evans in the 12th round of last year’s Draft.
Dipoto expressed that Evans was enthusiastic about the change, seeing it as a valuable opportunity. The Mariners are seriously considering Evans for a spot in their Major League bullpen, potentially as soon as after the All-Star break. This move reflects the team’s aggressive approach to maintaining their first-place position and making a strong postseason push.
Evans recently pitched two innings for Arkansas, allowing two hits and one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout. The plan includes gradually shortening his outings over the next three to four weeks. As a starter, Evans had an impressive 1.23 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings, holding hitters to a .540 OPS.
The Mariners have successfully transitioned pitchers like Edwin Díaz and Matt Brash from starters to elite relievers in the past. However, Evans’ transition is intended to be temporary, aiding the Mariners in their second-half push while still viewing him as a long-term starter.

Dipoto emphasized Evans’ exceptional pitching skills, noting that while his repertoire is extensive, simplicity might be key in a reliever role.
Evans could become the latest success story in Seattle’s player development system, which has seen players like Logan Gilbert and George Kirby make significant impacts in the Majors. Despite average results at the University of Pittsburgh, Evans was recommended to Dipoto’s staff based on his pitching profile, and his progress has been promising.

Starting the year at Double-A Arkansas after just three starts at Single-A Modesto, Evans has shown advanced skills beyond his years. If everything goes according to plan, he could be joining the Major League team sooner rather than later.
“Hopefully he’s the next in line,” Dipoto said, highlighting the potential for Evans to make a seamless transition to the big league clubhouse.
