Breaking News:Saints HC Dennis Allen Reveals Why He Wants Saints Rookie Spencer Rattler to compete with Derek Carr…

Former South Carolina star Spencer Rattler had to wait until the fifth round of the NFL Draft to be selected, but he landed in a favorable situation with the Saints, who picked him at No. 150 overall. Head coach Dennis Allen plans to give Rattler a chance to compete for the starting quarterback position.

Allen told Rich Eisen, “The plan is that he comes in and really basically competes, and we’ll let the cards kind of play out as they do.” Despite Derek Carr returning as the starting quarterback, his recent inconsistency could open the door for Rattler if he performs well in the preseason.

Allen feels the Saints got a steal with Rattler, who he believes has second or third-round talent. “We were excited about the fact that we got into the fifth round and he was still there. From where we had him graded on our board, we felt like this player was probably more of a second or third-round talent,” Allen said. The unique draft situation, with six quarterbacks taken early, allowed Rattler to fall to the Saints.

Initially, the Saints were considering a quarterback in the first round but opted for Oregon State offensive lineman Taliese Fuaga at No. 14 overall instead. Allen was pleased with this outcome, stating that the early run on quarterbacks pushed other valuable players down the board to their spot.

Allen is optimistic about Rattler’s future, noting his tremendous talent. “Now it’s just about getting him in here, teaching him the things that we want him to know, and being able to execute the things that we want him to be able to execute,” Allen said.
