As Memorial Day weekend unfolds, the LSU Football program is gearing up for its summer workouts, with the full roster arriving on campus. This marks a busy travel period for the team and staff, as they head back to Baton Rouge along with some key newcomers.
Summer workouts kick off on Tuesday, providing the staff with a chance to evaluate the incoming players and returnees in terms of strength and conditioning. While there’s excitement about the return of seasoned players, the spotlight will be on the newcomers joining the team for the first time.
Among the most critical additions are the spring transfers, particularly defensive tackles Jay’Viar Suggs and Gio Paez, who joined the Tigers this spring. Both players are poised to fill essential roles on the defensive line, with Suggs especially facing a significant step up in competition. His summer reps will be crucial for his development as he prepares to go up against some of the nation’s best offensive linemen.
Additionally, 13 incoming freshmen who didn’t enroll early at LSU will also join the team this weekend. The most notable name is five-star defensive tackle Dominick McKinley. With LSU in dire need of defensive tackle talent, McKinley has the potential to secure a starting position with a strong performance over the summer.
On the offensive side, Caden Durham is the player to watch this summer. Given Trey Holly’s legal issues, Durham is expected to see substantial playing time this season. Another exciting prospect is tight end Trey’Dez Green, who has the talent to become a significant receiving threat in the future.
Building a College Football Playoff Contender
The summer period is crucial for shaping LSU into a true college football contender. Defensive line coach Bo Davis faces the critical task of preparing Jay’Viar Suggs, Gio Paez, and Dominick McKinley for the season opener against USC.
