Tennessee Lands at No. 15 in Updated S&P+ Rankings
As the 2024 college football season approaches, Bill Connelly has updated his S&P+ rankings, placing Tennessee at No. 15 overall. According to Connelly’s formula, the Volunteers have a 23.4 percent chance of achieving a 10-2 record or better.
New Era Under Center
Tennessee is set to begin a new chapter with former five-star prospect Nico Iamaleava taking over as quarterback. With Iamaleava leading the offense, Tennessee’s attack is ranked 14th in the S&P+ rankings. The team benefits from a solid offensive line, the return of dynamic running back Dylan Sampson, and key receivers Bru McCoy and Squirrel White.
Defensive Outlook
Defensively, Tennessee is ranked 19th overall. The front line is expected to be strong, though the secondary poses significant questions. Edge rusher James Pearce is back and poised to potentially become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Veterans Omari Thomas and Keenan Pili will also return, but the defensive backfield has been completely overhauled, adding an element of uncertainty.
Challenges in Returning Production
Tennessee ranks 108th in returning production, a crucial factor in preseason rankings. This low ranking is primarily due to the loss of their entire secondary to graduation and the transfer portal.
SEC Depth
In the SEC, Tennessee ranks ninth, underscoring the depth of the conference, which now includes Texas and Oklahoma.
