As the LSU football team wrapped up the Spring transfer period, expectations were high for landing multiple defensive tackles. However, the Tigers only managed to secure Jay’Viar Suggs. Despite hosting nearly a dozen defensive tackles on official visits and offering scholarships, LSU fell short of its ambitions.
Brian Kelly, head coach of the Tigers, addressed the situation, emphasizing the program’s stance on not “buying players.” Speaking to WAFB-TV, Kelly stated, “We are not in the market of buying players, and unfortunately, right now, that’s what some guys are looking for.”
Kelly’s reference to “buying players” pertains to the increasing demands for NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals by transfers. According to 24/7 Sports, the estimated NIL range for starting-caliber defensive tackles starts at $250,000 and can reach as high as $600,000, with some fetching even larger deals. Given these figures, Kelly’s decision to refrain from participating in the bidding wars becomes understandable.
The current landscape of college football necessitates teams paying recruits annually. For Kelly, investing such steep sums in players who might only make a one-season impact isn’t justifiable. Kelly’s stance is further bolstered by LSU’s recent success at defensive tackle, with three players signing NFL contracts worth $13 million and receiving $3.3 million in signing bonuses.
