In a decisive move, the New Orleans Saints have opted not to exercise the fifth-year option for defensive end Payton Turner, paving the way for him to enter free agency next March.
The option, valued at nearly $14 million, would have allowed the Saints to retain Turner’s services for an additional year. However, given Turner’s history of injuries and limited on-field production since being drafted 28th overall, the Saints chose to forgo this opportunity.
Turner’s injury woes have been a recurring theme throughout his career, with the defensive end appearing in just 15 games and tallying two sacks thus far. Last season, Turner’s campaign was marred by a toe injury sustained in Week 1, which ultimately required surgery. Despite making a late-season comeback in the Saints’ final game against the Atlanta Falcons, Turner’s playing time was limited.
His rookie season also saw him sidelined due to a shoulder injury, followed by a string of other ailments in 2022, restricting him to just eight games.
With a competitive defensive end rotation in place, Turner faces the challenge of earning playing time amidst stiff competition. The Saints’ acquisition of edge rusher Chase Young in free agency further adds to the depth at the position, alongside established talents like Carl Granderson, Cam Jordan, and Isaiah Foskey.
As Turner looks ahead to the upcoming season, his future with the Saints remains uncertain, with negotiations for a potential new deal looming on the horizon.
