In the wake of his selection as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, former Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims found himself at the center of attention following criticism from Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.
Saban, known for his sharp analysis and high standards, questioned Mims’ consistency during his college career, particularly referencing Mims’ limited playing time in key games such as the SEC Championship. Saban’s remarks, aired during the draft coverage, raised questions about Mims’ readiness for the NFL.
“This guy’s got all the tools, he’s got great size, he’s got great power. But it makes you wonder, how did the guy only start 8 [games]? Like, in the SEC championship game, he played only the first 15 plays of the game and then he’s out. Takes himself out. I don’t know what he injured, what he hurt, whatever. But you’ve got to be a little bit more consistent in your performance if you’re going to be a great player and a starter in the National Football League,”Saban said on ABC night one of the draft.
In response, Mims remained composed, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to join the Bengals and dismissing Saban’s comments. “Everybody has their own opinions of me. I don’t really care about what [Saban] said or what he had to say, honestly. I’m just glad to be a Cincinnati Bengal,” Mims stated.
Opting for the high road, Mims focused on his future in the NFL, highlighting his commitment to contributing to Cincinnati’s success and supporting franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. As he embarks on this new chapter in his football career, Mims remains determined to prove himself on the field and make a meaningful impact for his team.
