Northampton Town manager Jon Brady has shed light on the decision to keep former Reading FC captain Liam Moore sidelined during their recent clash against his old club.
Despite the potential for a nostalgic reunion on the field, Brady opted to prioritize Moore’s long-term fitness over the sentimental allure of facing his former teammates. Moore, who joined Northampton in February following a period of absence from professional football, had been a consistent presence in the team’s lineup until a recent injury setback.
Having made over 230 appearances for Reading over seven years, Moore’s return to face his former club would have undoubtedly stirred emotions among fans. However, concerns over his physical condition led to his omission from the matchday squad as Northampton suffered a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan’s goal.
Explaining the decision, Brady emphasized the importance of managing Moore’s playing time carefully to avoid risking further injury. Despite Moore’s desire to take part in the encounter, Brady stressed the need for a pragmatic approach, prioritizing the player’s well-being over sentimental considerations.
Acknowledging the emotional significance of facing an old club, Brady affirmed that while Moore’s return would have been a romantic storyline, the prudent course of action was to prioritize his fitness and make decisions in the best interest of his long-term health. Such tough decisions, he noted, are part and parcel of the responsibilities that come with managing a team.
