The Los Angeles Rams, coming off a tough 43-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, might have to explore alternative quarterback options moving forward. This is due to an unfortunate thumb injury sustained by Matthew Stafford during the game. Stafford injured his thumb when it collided with the helmet of rookie defensive lineman Mazi Smith in the second quarter. Subsequently, Stafford’s playing time in the third quarter was limited to just one series before he was replaced by Brett Rypien.
During the game, the Rams attempted a two-point conversion trick play that resembled the “Philly Special” from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. In this play, Tutu Atwell’s pass was underthrown, but Stafford caught it, reaching across the goal line. However, this aggravated his injured thumb, leading to his exit from the game.
Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports that the Rams are considering the possibility of placing Stafford on the injured reserve list as they gather more information to determine the extent of his injury. Depending on the severity, this decision could impact his availability for the game against the Seattle Seahawks on November 19, especially considering the Rams have a bye week after their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers.
As things stand, Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on the Rams’ roster apart from Stafford, as rookie Stetson Bennett is currently on the non-football injury/illness list.
In the previous season, the Seahawks managed to secure victories against the Rams, partly because the Rams had to start John Wolford and Baker Mayfield at quarterback. These victories were narrow and occurred while star players Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp were also absent. In contrast, Stafford had a successful performance against Seattle’s secondary on the opening day of this season, although Seattle was missing key defensive players Devon Witherspoon and Jamal Adams.
This situation is worth monitoring closely, as it could potentially lead to the Seahawks facing another backup quarterback this season.
