“Good win for the staff,”: Omar Khan
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a notable addition to their coaching staff, bringing in Anthony Midget as the assistant secondary coach. Despite not being a former NFL head coach, Midget brings nine years of valuable NFL experience to the table. His most recent stint was as the defensive backs coach for the Tennessee Titans from 2020 to 2022, preceded by six years in a similar role with the Houston Texans.
Mark Kaboly of The Athletic described Midget as “way overqualified for the job,” a sentiment echoed by others in the industry. Despite not having played in any NFL regular-season games, Midget had a two-season stint on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad before transitioning to coaching.
Midget’s coaching career began with the Texans in 2014, where he served as the assistant secondary coach before earning a promotion to secondary coach in 2018. During his tenure with the Texans, the team achieved a solid record, with only one losing season over six years. The Texans’ pass defense notably improved under Midget’s guidance, ranking in the top three in passing yards allowed during certain seasons.

Transitioning to the Titans in 2020, Midget’s coaching prowess continued, contributing to the team’s success in interceptions during his first season. However, the Titans struggled in pass defense in 2022, leading to Midget’s departure from the team.
Prior to his NFL coaching career, Midget gained coaching experience at various levels, starting from high school in Florida and later serving as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech. He also held coaching positions at Georgia State and Penn State before making the leap to the NFL.
Despite speculation about the Steelers potentially hiring more experienced NFL coaches, such as Mike Vrabel or Eric Bieniemy, Midget’s appointment adds depth to the coaching staff, particularly in the defensive backfield. He will work alongside secondary coach Grady Brown in developing the Steelers’ defensive backs.
