Analyst Slams at Cardinals Decision about New Signing…

An analyst attacks the Cardinals’ new signing decision…

The signing of Jonah Williams to the Arizona Cardinals did not sit well with Bleacher Report.

Arizona Jonah Williams, an offensive tackle with the Cincinnati Bengals, was signed by the Arizona Cardinals yesterday in their first major trade of free agency. The agreement is reportedly worth $30 million over two years, with $19 million guaranteed.

It occurred fairly soon after left tackle D.J. Humphries was released, which was to be expected considering his age, health, and contract situation.

Williams’ intended side of the argument is still unknown, but Bleacher Report is obviously not pleased with the decision:

“Williams’ starting experience at both right and left tackle provides Arizona some flexibility when they select Paris Johnson Jr. in the first round of the 2023 draft. Johnson might now switch to left tackle after Williams demonstrated some progress as a run-blocker after switching to the right side in 2023, according to Kristopher Knox.

Sadly, Williams has not performed well in pass protection when lining up in any position. Pro Football Focus reports that in 2023, the 26-year-old was in charge of five penalties and eight sacks allowed.

“Williams was one of the better options on an underwhelming tackle market, but at $15 million annually with $19 million guaranteed, the Cardinals overpaid.”

Going forward, Williams and Johnson are expected to work together as Kyler Murray’s bookend tackles.

According to Spotrac, Williams’ $30 million total value is sixth among free agent offensive lineman this cycle, while his average annual salary of $15 million is fourth and his total guaranteed money of $19 million is seventh.

By 2024, 25 offensive tackles will have earned an average yearly salary of at least $15 million.
