Joey Votto, a veteran of 17 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, has entered free agency for the first time in his career. However, he has not received much interest from teams, prompting him to make a humorous threat on his Instagram story. Votto jokingly stated that if he remains unsigned, he will stop returning his shopping carts after shopping.
In a video posted on his Instagram story, Votto can be seen pushing a shopping cart lazily towards the return area in a parking lot. He compares returning carts to golf balls, saying that the goal is to get them close to the hole.
Votto is known for his deadpan humor, and this is not the first time he has made light of a situation. In January, when Joe Mauer was voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Votto shared a story about the time he told Mauer, who is older than him, that he admired him growing up.
Throughout his career, Votto has accumulated impressive statistics, including 2,135 hits, 356 home runs, 1,144 RBI, and a 64.4 WAR. He is a six-time All-Star and a former NL MVP with a career batting average of .294.
Despite his accomplishments, Votto’s future in baseball remains uncertain. There have been reports of interest from multiple teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels, and Milwaukee Brewers. A return to the Reds is also a possibility, although not as a player.
Votto recently completed a 10-year, $225 million contract with the Reds, batting .202 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI, a .747 OPS, and a -0.1 WAR in 65 games.
