In a surprising and disappointing turn for the Duke Blue Devils, the program has suffered another significant blow this offseason as rising star has officially entered the transfer portal — and committed to join a rival program.
The news was confirmed Thursday morning, sending shockwaves through the Duke basketball community. Sheffield, known for his toughness, versatility, and sharpshooting ability, had emerged as a key piece of the team’s depth and future potential. His decision to leave Durham marks yet another critical departure as head coach Jon Scheyer looks to retool the roster heading into next season.
“After much thought and prayer, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal and continue my journey elsewhere,” Sheffield wrote in a statement. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a storied program and thankful to the Duke coaching staff, my teammates, and the fans.”
Sheffield’s next destination? According to multiple sources, he has committed to Virginia, a move that adds even more sting to his exit. Facing him in ACC play next season will undoubtedly add drama and intensity to already-heated matchups.
The 6-foot-6 guard/forward was expected to play an expanded role this season after showing promise as a two-way contributor. He averaged solid minutes off the bench last year, showcasing his ability to stretch the floor, defend multiple positions, and bring energy on both ends. His upside made him a projected breakout candidate under Scheyer’s system.
This departure follows a string of offseason changes for the Blue Devils, who have already seen key players declare for the NBA Draft or hit the portal. While the program continues to bring in elite recruits, the growing list of exits — especially to rival programs — raises questions about depth and chemistry heading into the 2025 season.
Duke is expected to remain aggressive in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail to fill the voids. But for now, the loss of Cameron Sheffield — and the fact he’s heading to a rival — is nothing short of a major setback for a program aiming to return to Final Four contention.
