In a blockbuster move that has sent shockwaves through Major League Baseball, the Houston Astros have officially acquired Miles Mikolas, the veteran right-hander with a $91 million contract, in a trade deadline stunner aimed at bolstering their starting rotation for the stretch run.
The deal, finalized Tuesday afternoon, brings the St. Louis Cardinals ace to Houston in exchange for a package that includes a top Astros pitching prospect and a pair of promising minor leaguers. It marks one of the boldest moves of the 2025 trade deadline and underscores Houston’s determination to make another serious push toward a World Series title.
“Miles is a proven workhorse with playoff experience and tremendous poise on the mound,” said Astros GM Dana Brown in a statement. “He’s exactly the kind of veteran presence we were looking to add, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to Houston.”
Mikolas, 36, is known for his command, durability, and ability to eat innings — something the Astros have been in dire need of, especially with recent injuries affecting the rotation. Though he’s had an up-and-down season with St. Louis, Houston believes a change of scenery — and a pennant race atmosphere — could rejuvenate his performance.
The veteran pitcher is currently in the second year of a four-year, $91 million contract, which the Astros will reportedly absorb in full, signaling just how committed the organization is to making a deep playoff run.
In return, the Cardinals receive [Top Prospect Name], a flame-throwing righty ranked among Houston’s top three minor league arms, along with two additional young players with high upside. It’s a significant haul, but one the Astros were willing to part with to land a trusted veteran starter.
Mikolas is expected to join the Astros immediately and could make his debut later this week, likely slotting into the middle of the rotation alongside Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier.
With Houston locked in a tight race in the AL West, this move may prove to be the spark the team needs heading into the final months of the regular season.
Fans can expect a press conference and official team introduction later this week.
