Official Mariners’ News: Seattle Mariners Officially Bring Back Top-Talented And Well-Experienced Superstar To Shape Squad…

The Seattle Mariners have officially re-signed veteran infielder Jorge Polanco to a one-year contract with a vesting option for the 2026 season. The deal guarantees Polanco $7.75 million, comprising a $7 million base salary for 2025 and a $750,000 buyout on a mutual option. This mutual option can convert into a $6 million player option if Polanco reaches 450 plate appearances, escalating to $8 million upon reaching 550 plate appearances. Additionally, Polanco can earn up to $3.5 million in incentives, potentially bringing the total value of the contract to $18.5 million over two seasons.

Polanco’s first season with the Mariners in 2024 was challenging, as he posted a .213 batting average with 16 home runs over 469 plate appearances. These numbers marked personal lows in batting average and on-base percentage. Health issues contributed to his struggles; Polanco underwent surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his left knee shortly after the season concluded. Despite these setbacks, the Mariners are optimistic about his recovery and expect him to be ready for the start of spring training.

In a strategic move, the Mariners plan to transition Polanco to third base for the 2025 season, addressing a position of need. While his major league experience at third base is limited to 20 starts and 180 innings, the team believes his skills and experience will translate well to the hot corner. This shift also allows the Mariners to utilize their internal options at second base more effectively, with players like Ryan Bliss and Dylan Moore expected to compete for the starting role.

This re-signing reflects the Mariners’ commitment to bolstering their infield depth and overall roster strength as they aim for a successful 2025 season. With Polanco’s return and strategic position adjustments, the team is poised to enhance both their offensive and defensive capabilities.
