In a significant setback for the San Diego Padres, first baseman Jake Cronenworth has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured right wrist. The injury occurred on Friday night when Cronenworth was hit by a 93-mph sinker from Milwaukee Brewers reliever Andrew Chafin during the Padres’ 7-3 loss in Milwaukee.
Cronenworth, 29, has been a pivotal player for the Padres, known for his versatility and consistent performance. Prior to the injury, he had appeared in 127 games this season, batting .229 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs. His defensive skills have been instrumental, primarily playing at first base but also having experience at second base and shortstop.
The Padres’ President of Baseball Operations, A.J. Preller, expressed the challenge of replacing a core player like Cronenworth, emphasizing his daily contributions to the team. The good news is that Cronenworth is expected to avoid surgery, with a straightforward recovery anticipated.
This injury adds to a challenging season for the Padres, who are striving to maintain momentum in the National League West. Cronenworth’s absence will undoubtedly be felt both offensively and defensively as the team navigates the remainder of the season without one of its key contributors.
