The Philadelphia Phillies could be on the verge of a league-altering move as rumors swirl around a potential blockbuster trade involving Boston Red Sox superstar Rafael Devers.
The Red Sox may have created an internal dilemma after signing Alex Bregman last week, as reports suggest that Devers isn’t pleased about shifting from third base to designated hitter to accommodate the new acquisition. While a trade isn’t imminent, frustration could push Devers toward the door sooner than expected.
If the situation escalates, Boston may be forced to explore trade options, and the Philadelphia Phillies have already been identified as a top potential landing spot.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently named the Phillies as a team that could aggressively pursue Devers if he becomes available.
“It feels like next offseason is when Philly might try to engineer another marquee addition, but we can never count out Dave Dombrowski when a big-ticket player hits the market,” Kline wrote. “The Phillies are in an active arms race with Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York in a highly competitive National League. Stacking Devers behind Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper in the lineup would go a long way toward cementing the Phils as bona fide, top-tier contenders.”
Philadelphia has been linked to Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado in recent trade talks, indicating their interest in upgrading at third base. The Phillies have also reportedly been open to trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm, who could serve as a key trade piece in a potential Devers deal.
However, one major roadblock could be Philadelphia’s farm system depth. While the Phillies have some intriguing prospects, they may not have the elite-level assets required to outbid other potential suitors for Devers.
While no deal is imminent, the idea of Rafael Devers in a Phillies uniform is gaining traction. If Boston fails to resolve the situation, Philadelphia could be in prime position to make a franchise-changing move.
For now, all eyes remain on the Red Sox and Devers as this developing situation continues to unfold.
