With spring training already underway, the Philadelphia Phillies are still exploring ways to enhance their roster depth. Pitchers and catchers have reported, and with full workouts set to begin soon, the team is actively looking for additional talent to invite to camp.
The Phillies have already made a few minor league signings, including former top prospect Christian Arroyo and ex-Phillie Óscar Mercado, to improve competition in camp. However, with several free agents still available, the front office remains engaged in discussions to strengthen depth in key areas, particularly in the infield, outfield, and bullpen.
4 Free Agents the Phillies Should Target as Minor League Depth
Brendan Rodgers, 2B
Rodgers, a six-year veteran with the Colorado Rockies, presents an intriguing option. The former No. 3 overall pick and 2022 Gold Glove winner could use spring training as an opportunity to reset his career. Last season, he hit .267 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI, and he could provide valuable infield depth for the Phillies. His defensive skills and ability to play multiple positions make him an ideal bench option, allowing players like Edmundo Sosa and Kody Clemens more flexibility.
Mark Canha, OF
Canha, a 10-year MLB veteran, could bolster the Phillies’ outfield depth, particularly as a right-handed bat in a left-handed-heavy lineup. The Phillies have previously been linked to Canha, and as he remains unsigned into mid-February, he could become a realistic target. With a career .249 batting average, 120 home runs, and a bWAR of 15.3, Canha’s experience and versatility at both corner outfield spots and first base could be invaluable.
Will Smith, LHP
The Phillies could also look to add another veteran arm to their bullpen, and Will Smith is an option worth considering. The 35-year-old left-hander is a three-time World Series champion and former All-Star. Despite posting a 6.53 ERA over 41 1/3 innings with the Royals last season, Smith has a proven track record in high-leverage situations. Given the Phillies’ postseason bullpen struggles, his experience could be a valuable asset.
Anthony DeSclafani, RHP
Looking for a bounce-back candidate, the Phillies could take a chance on DeSclafani, who has not pitched in an MLB game since 2023 due to injury. The 34-year-old has a career 3.99 ERA over his best seasons with the Giants and could be a low-risk, high-reward addition. Like the Phillies’ previous signing of Spencer Turnbull, DeSclafani could provide depth as a long reliever or spot starter.
As the Phillies gear up for the 2025 season, adding experienced depth pieces remains a priority. With a few roster spots still open, the team could make more moves in the coming weeks to strengthen its depth across the board.
