The San Diego Padres have officially strengthened their outfield depth, announcing the signing of veteran outfielder to a one-year, $1 million contract on Tuesday. The deal also includes performance bonuses that could add an additional $250,000, rewarding Heyward for reaching plate appearance milestones.
Heyward, 35, brings a wealth of experience and defensive versatility to the Padres, having spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. In 87 games during the 2024 campaign, he posted a .211 batting average with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs. He also proved to be an effective pinch hitter, going 5-for-10 with two home runs, a triple, and seven RBIs in that role.
A five-time Gold Glove Award winner, Heyward has long been known for his defensive prowess. Over his 15-year major league career, he has recorded a .256 batting average with 184 home runs, 718 RBIs, and 125 stolen bases while maintaining a .748 OPS. His ability to provide leadership in the clubhouse, combined with his defensive reliability in both corner outfield spots, makes him a valuable addition to the Padres’ roster.
Padres general manager A.J. Preller emphasized the importance of adding a veteran presence to the team, stating, “Jason’s experience, leadership, and defensive ability make him a great fit for our club. He’s a proven winner, and we believe he’ll have a positive impact both on the field and in the locker room.”
Heyward’s most notable career highlight came in 2016 when he helped the Chicago Cubs win their first World Series in 108 years. Though his offensive numbers have fluctuated over the years, his ability to provide timely hitting and elite defense has kept him in demand. He was an All-Star in 2010, finishing second in NL Rookie of the Year voting while playing for the Atlanta Braves.
The veteran outfielder earned $9 million last season under his deal with the Dodgers, who released him on August 24. He then signed with the Astros, playing a key role for Houston down the stretch.
With the Padres looking to retool and compete in a highly competitive National League West, Heyward’s signing adds both depth and experience to the club. His veteran presence and defensive skills could play a crucial role as San Diego aims for a postseason return in 2025.
