DONE DEAL: New York Mets Have Reached a Lucrative Agreement with Pete Alonso to a…

The New York Mets and star first baseman Pete Alonso have officially agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract, ensuring the slugger’s return to Queens for at least the 2025 season. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Alonso will earn $30 million in 2025 and will have the option to opt out after the season. The deal is pending a physical.

With spring training just a week away, this move solidifies the Mets’ lineup for the upcoming season without committing to a long-term deal. The agreement allows the team to remain financially flexible while keeping one of its most productive hitters in the fold.

Since making his MLB debut in 2019, Alonso has been a cornerstone of the Mets’ offense. He exploded onto the scene with a record-breaking 53 home runs as a rookie, and his 226 career homers rank third all-time in franchise history. A career .249/.339/.514 hitter, Alonso has played first base in 846 of the 870 games the Mets have played since his debut.

Alonso’s future in New York had been uncertain after he reportedly turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension in 2023 following his decision to hire Scott Boras as his agent and test the free-agent market. While this new deal still represents a massive payday, it comes in below expectations for what many believed Alonso could command.

The first base market proved to be thinner than expected, and the Mets remained firm in their negotiations, ultimately securing a short-term agreement on their terms. While Alonso may have hoped for a longer, more lucrative deal, this contract allows him to reassess his value after 2025.

With Alonso now set to bat behind Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, the Mets boast a formidable lineup heading into the 2025 season. Additionally, Alonso is just 26 home runs away from breaking Darryl Strawberry’s franchise home run record, meaning Mets fans will have plenty to celebrate at Citi Field this year.

No matter how long his tenure lasts, Alonso remains a fan favorite and a key part of the Mets’ identity. For now, the Polar Bear is back in Queens—and all of New York is ready to welcome him home.
