As the Philadelphia Phillies gear up for the 2025 Spring Training, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski addressed several pressing questions concerning the team’s offseason moves and upcoming season strategies.
Offseason Roster Adjustments
Dombrowski emphasized the organization’s commitment to maintaining a competitive roster, stating, “We’re committed to putting together the best possible team for 2025. Some tough decisions had to be made, but we believe these moves will put us in a great position to compete at the highest level.”
Approach to Free Agency and Trades
When questioned about the team’s strategy in the free-agent market and potential trades, Dombrowski conveyed an open-minded stance. He noted that while the Phillies were prepared to explore various opportunities, they were not intent on making moves solely for the sake of activity. “We value our core players, but at the same time, we have to make calculated decisions that benefit the team in the long run,” he remarked.
Managing Pitching Prospects
Regarding the development of pitching prospects, particularly Andrew Painter, Dombrowski outlined a cautious approach. He indicated that Painter would begin throwing but is not expected to pitch in Spring Training games. The plan involves building up his innings in the minors, with a potential major league debut around mid-season. “We’re going to push the innings back… we’re going to save a lot of his innings until we get to July-ish at the big league level,” Dombrowski explained.
Expectations for the 2025 Season
Dombrowski expressed confidence in the team’s current roster, highlighting the strength of the core group. He acknowledged the disappointment of the previous season’s early playoff exit but emphasized that the focus remains on performing well at crucial times. “To me, the answer is not the missing piece. The answer is playing well at the right time,” he stated.
Long-Term Vision and Championship Aspirations
Addressing the organization’s long-term goals, Dombrowski reiterated the commitment to building a championship-caliber team. He emphasized the importance of strategic planning and the willingness to make necessary adjustments to achieve sustained success. “We’re committed to putting together the best possible team for 2025,” Dombrowski affirmed.
As Spring Training approaches, the Phillies’ leadership remains focused on refining the roster and preparing for a successful 2025 campaign.
