The San Diego Padres have pulled off another major move, reaching a mutual agreement with the New York Mets to acquire 31-year-old veteran star Pete Alonso in a blockbuster trade. The deal includes a 5-year extension for Alonso, solidifying his place as the Padres’ new centerpiece.
Alonso, known as the “Polar Bear,” has been one of MLB’s premier sluggers since his debut. The 2024 season saw him blast 45 home runs with 118 RBIs, further cementing his reputation as one of the game’s most feared hitters. By adding Alonso, the Padres not only strengthen their lineup but also make a loud statement about their commitment to contending for a World Series title.
Padres GM A.J. Preller expressed excitement about the deal: “Pete is a generational talent and the kind of player who can change the trajectory of a franchise. We’re thrilled to have him in San Diego and look forward to the impact he’ll have on our team for years to come.”
The Mets, in return, are receiving a haul that includes top prospects Jackson Merrill (SS) and Robbie Snelling (LHP), as well as an additional MLB-ready player. The move signals a retooling phase for New York, as they look to balance their roster and build a more sustainable future under new leadership.
For the Padres, Alonso adds another elite bat to a lineup that already features Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, and Xander Bogaerts, giving them one of the most formidable offenses in baseball.
