The Baltimore Orioles have officially completed a blockbuster trade to acquire Gold Glove-winning infielder Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, the Orioles will send two of their top prospects, outfielder Heston Kjerstad and right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez, to the Cardinals in a move that signals Baltimore’s determination to contend for a championship in 2025.
This trade is monumental for the Orioles, who are coming off a season where they showed significant promise but lacked the veteran presence to push them deep into the playoffs. Arenado, widely regarded as one of the best defensive third basemen in MLB history, brings leadership, postseason experience, and a potent bat to the Orioles’ lineup.
In 2024, Arenado slashed .270/.333/.500 with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, solidifying his reputation as a reliable offensive force. His stellar defense, highlighted by 10 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, will immediately elevate Baltimore’s infield defense.
Orioles General Manager Mike Elias addressed the media following the trade:
“Nolan Arenado is a transformative player. His track record speaks for itself, and we believe he will be a critical piece in our pursuit of a championship. While parting with top prospects is never easy, we are confident this move positions us to win now.”
For the Cardinals, this trade marks a shift toward rebuilding, as they acquire two of the Orioles’ most prized prospects. Heston Kjerstad, Baltimore’s No. 2 prospect, boasts elite power potential and projects as a middle-of-the-order slugger. Grayson Rodriguez, the Orioles’ top pitching prospect, has already showcased his skills at the major league level with a fastball that touches 99 mph and a devastating slider.
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak shared his perspective on the deal:
“This was a tough but necessary decision. Nolan meant so much to our organization, but adding two elite young players gives us a bright future. We thank Nolan for his incredible contributions and wish him the best in Baltimore.”
With this trade, the Orioles send a clear message: they are all-in on competing for a World Series title. Adding Arenado’s talent and experience to a roster brimming with young stars like Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson sets Baltimore up as one of the most dangerous teams in the American League heading into 2025.
