San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arráez has once again become a focal point of offseason trade rumors as he enters his final year of arbitration eligibility. The four-time All-Star, fresh off a stellar 2024 season, has been linked to potential moves as the Padres look to shed payroll heading into 2025.
Arráez, who claimed his third consecutive batting title in 2024 while donning his third different uniform in as many years, is projected to earn $13.7 million next season, according to Spotrac. While the Padres are navigating financial challenges, both Arráez and impending free agent Dylan Cease have been floated as trade candidates.
One team reportedly interested in Arráez is the reigning American League champion New York Yankees. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Yankees “continue to discuss” Arráez with the Padres, sparking speculation that the 26-year-old could be on the move for the fourth time in four seasons.
Arráez’s 2024 campaign was another testament to his elite hitting ability. He slashed .314/.346/.392 with 39 extra-base hits and a mere 29 strikeouts over 150 games. He surpassed the 200-hit milestone for the second consecutive season and earned his third straight All-Star nod, cementing himself as one of baseball’s most consistent offensive performers.
Despite his on-field success, Arráez’s career has been anything but stable. After winning his first batting title with the Minnesota Twins in 2022, he was traded to the Miami Marlins in a deal involving Pablo López. Following a 2023 season where he hit .354 to claim his second batting crown, the Marlins, beginning a rebuild, shipped him to the Padres during the early months of 2024.
Though Arráez expressed interest in staying in San Diego, he acknowledged the uncertain nature of baseball. “If they want to sign me, I want to stay here,” he said after the Padres’ NLDS loss to the Dodgers. “But this is business. I understand the business.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Arráez recently commented on a social media post discussing a potential Yankees-Padres trade with a cryptic two-emoji message: a smiley face and an upside-down smiley face. While the meaning remains unclear, the comment has only intensified speculation about his future.
As the Yankees seek to bolster their lineup, Arráez stands out as one of the best hitters available. With both teams familiar with blockbuster deals, Arráez could soon find himself wearing pinstripes, adding yet another chapter to his unpredictable career journey.
