LATEST MLB UPDATES: A Real Threat to Steal Pete Alonso from the New York Mets…READ MORE IN COMMENTS>>>

If there’s one team capable of stealing Pete Alonso from the New York Mets, it’s the Los Angeles Angels—a franchise notorious for overpaying free agents without much success.

While Alonso’s free-agent market remains quiet, recent MLB rumors tying the Angels to the four-time All-Star slugger have Mets fans on edge. The Angels have been unusually active this offseason, making moves like signing Yusei Kikuchi after his strong finish and taking a chance on former Cubs ace Kyle Hendricks. They’ve also added power bat Jorge Soler to their roster.

Despite being seen as an unappealing destination by many fans, the Angels could pose a significant threat to the Mets for all the wrong reasons.

The Angels have a history of offering massive contracts that often fail to deliver. From Albert Pujols’ bloated deal to the ongoing struggles of Anthony Rendon, the team has frequently mismanaged its resources. Even the extension for superstar Mike Trout, while justified, has become a burden due to injuries and a lack of postseason appearances.

Arte Moreno’s ownership has been marked by big spending and poor returns, earning the Angels comparisons to the NFL’s New York Jets—despite their best efforts, things rarely go their way. Adding Alonso to a team already in baseball purgatory could see him join the ranks of once-promising stars who faded into irrelevance.

California’s high taxes are another hurdle for the Angels. While teams like the Dodgers have found creative ways to mitigate these financial burdens, the Angels have not. Players like Alonso, who are likely looking for immediate, high-value contracts, might be deterred by deferred payments or complicated tax structures.

Still, the Angels’ willingness to overpay could make them a contender for Alonso’s services. For Alonso, who has made it clear he’s seeking top dollar, the Angels might present the most lucrative offer, albeit at the cost of competing on a subpar team.

Mets fans have come to terms with the likelihood that Alonso will follow the money. However, watching him sign with the Angels—a team struggling for relevance despite having Trout and Shohei Ohtani—would sting. It’s a reminder of how quickly a star player can fade from the spotlight in baseball purgatory.

For the Angels, overpaying for Alonso could be seen as a power move by Moreno to compete with the Mets’ Steve Cohen. But unless the Angels overhaul their team management and strategy, it’s unlikely Alonso’s potential addition will change their fortunes.
