Tatís, once heralded as the face of the franchise, has faced challenges in recent years, including injuries and a suspension for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Despite those setbacks, the Padres and Tatís have chosen to continue their partnership, with the new deal offering a fresh start for both sides.
The restructured deal carries an average annual value of $25 million and includes performance-based incentives that could boost its total value. The shorter duration allows Tatís to re-enter free agency at age 30, potentially giving him another opportunity for a lucrative long-term contract if he can return to peak form.
“This is about proving myself again,” Tatís said in a press conference. “I love San Diego, I love this team, and I’m committed to helping us win a championship. The past is the past—I’m focused on the future.”
The Padres’ decision to retain Tatís underscores their belief in his ability to bounce back and remain a cornerstone of their roster. After a roller-coaster 2024 season that ended with the team narrowly missing the playoffs, the Padres are determined to regroup and contend in the highly competitive NL West.
With Tatís back in the fold, the Padres will aim to capitalize on their star-studded roster, which includes Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Juan Soto. Tatís, who transitioned to the outfield in 2024, is expected to continue playing a versatile role, potentially splitting time between shortstop and right field.
