The Pittsburgh Steelers have been dealt another devastating setback as head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed on Friday that standout wide receiver Diontae Johnson will be sidelined for four months due to a critical hip injury. The announcement comes at a crucial juncture in the season, leaving the team scrambling to adjust its offensive game plan.
Johnson, 27, sustained the injury during the Steelers’ recent matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. While initially believed to be minor, further evaluations revealed significant damage requiring extensive rehabilitation. Tomlin addressed the situation during a press conference, expressing his disappointment but emphasizing the team’s resilience.
“It’s unfortunate to lose a player of Diontae’s caliber,” Tomlin said. “He’s been a critical part of our offense, and his absence will be felt. However, injuries are part of the game, and we have to adapt and move forward as a team.”
Johnson has been a key weapon for the Steelers since his rookie season in 2019. Known for his exceptional route-running and ability to create separation, he has consistently been one of the team’s most reliable targets. In the current season, Johnson had recorded 55 receptions for 711 yards and five touchdowns, underscoring his importance to the Steelers’ passing attack.
With Johnson sidelined, the Steelers will need to rely on their depth at the wide receiver position. Second-year receiver George Pickens is expected to take on an expanded role as the primary target for quarterback Kenny Pickett. Additionally, veterans Allen Robinson II and tight end Pat Freiermuth will likely see increased opportunities in the offense.
Tomlin also hinted at the possibility of exploring external options to bolster the receiving corps. “We’ll assess all avenues to ensure we’re in the best position to compete. Whether that’s promoting from within or looking outside, we’ll make the necessary adjustments,” he said.
Johnson expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from fans and teammates, vowing to return stronger. “This isn’t how I wanted the season to go, but I’m staying positive and focused on getting back to full strength,” Johnson shared on social media.
