Baseball analyst Cody Williams of FanSided highlighted the inevitability of this decision. “If we’re being real, what the Astros now likely plan to do with reliever Hector Neris is not solely related to the Walker trade,” Williams explained. “Rather, it’s the totality of what Houston has been doing this offseason, which Walker is now a part of, that puts the writing on the wall for the 35-year-old right-hander.”
Adding to the equation is former Chicago Cubs top prospect Hayden Wesneski, who arrived in Houston as part of the Tucker trade. While Wesneski projects as a long-term starter, he could initially contribute from the bullpen, further diminishing the need for Neris.
Neris has been a dependable piece in Houston’s bullpen since joining the team in 2022, but the Astros are clearly focused on building a younger, more versatile roster to remain competitive in 2025, 2026, and beyond. The reliever’s departure seems to align with their broader strategy of making bold moves and reallocating resources.
