The Philadelphia Phillies have made a surprising decision to part ways with two of their most talented players, as they prepare for the 2025 season. Both players have found new opportunities, but their exits mark a significant shift in the Phillies’ roster strategy.
Darick Hall, a power-hitting first baseman, has signed a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, including an invitation to major-league spring training. Hall confirmed the move to Phillies Nation on Thursday, with the initial report coming from Steve Potter of PhilliesBaseballFan.com.
Cristian Pache, a defensive standout in center field, has also secured a new opportunity. He agreed to a minor-league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which includes an invitation to spring training, as reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Hall, 29, spent eight seasons within the Phillies organization after being drafted in the 14th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. A former recipient of the Paul Owens Award for the top minor-league position player in 2022, Hall is the all-time leader in home runs for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with 76. His big bat earned him a stint in the Phillies’ lineup in 2022, filling in as Bryce Harper recovered from injury. Despite a strong start, a thumb injury in 2023 limited his opportunities, and Harper’s transition to first base further reduced Hall’s role. In 2024, he hit 16 home runs in Triple-A but was unable to reclaim a spot on the major-league roster.
Pache, 26, joined the Phillies via trade in early 2023 and quickly established himself as a platoon option against left-handed pitching. Known for his exceptional defensive skills, Pache struggled with injuries and inconsistent offense. After a middling 2024 season, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Austin Hays. Following his stint with Baltimore, Pache was claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins before landing with the Diamondbacks. A career .518 OPS in 251 games underscores his struggles at the plate, but his elite glove keeps him in demand.
The departures of Hall and Pache reflect the Phillies’ shifting priorities as they look to optimize their roster for the future. While these players’ paths with Philadelphia have ended, their new opportunities could provide fresh starts for their careers.
