In a surprising development, Philadelphia Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski addressed growing speculation regarding the team’s potential pursuit of Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki. During a press conference earlier today, Dombrowski put an end to the swirling rumors, revealing a shocking reason behind the Phillies’ inability to acquire the talented Japanese star.
“It’s not about interest,” Dombrowski stated firmly. “We think the world of Seiya Suzuki as a player. He’s a fantastic hitter and a great asset in the outfield. But there are certain circumstances that make a trade for him simply impossible at this time.”
While Dombrowski refrained from elaborating immediately, sources close to the situation later revealed the crux of the issue: Seiya Suzuki has a unique contract clause that significantly complicates any trade discussions. Signed to a five-year, $85 million deal with the Cubs prior to the 2022 season, Suzuki’s agreement reportedly includes a provision that grants him a no-trade clause for the first three years of his contract.
This clause gives Suzuki full control over potential trade destinations, meaning the outfielder would have to personally approve any move before it happens. According to insiders, Suzuki’s preference is to remain in Chicago and continue building upon his success with the Cubs.
“Seiya enjoys playing for the Cubs and being part of the city,” an MLB executive familiar with the situation said. “He’s comfortable there, and with the Cubs’ recent improvements, he believes they’re heading in the right direction.”
The Phillies, who have been exploring options to strengthen their outfield depth and lineup consistency, had reportedly inquired about Suzuki’s availability earlier this offseason. However, with Suzuki holding veto power over any deal and a clear desire to remain in Chicago, Philadelphia’s pursuit hit an immediate roadblock.
For the Phillies, the focus will now shift to alternative targets. With a strong core led by Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber, Dombrowski emphasized the team’s commitment to finding pieces that complement their roster without overextending their resources.
“We’re always exploring ways to improve, but we respect a player’s contract and wishes,” Dombrowski concluded. “Seiya Suzuki is a phenomenal player, but this isn’t a path we can pursue right now.”
As the offseason rolls on, the Phillies will continue to monitor the trade and free-agent markets, looking for the right fit to bolster their championship aspirations.
