The Philadelphia Phillies have been linked to one of the top relief pitchers on the market, in a move that could transform their bullpen heading into the 2025 MLB season. Scott, a left-handed flamethrower and 2024 All-Star, is widely regarded as the best available reliever in free agency. However, the Phillies’ financial priorities and strategic approach to roster-building may make this a long shot.
Scott’s Elite Performance
Scott, 29, was sensational in 2024, splitting time between the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres after a midseason trade. Over 72 innings, he posted a sparkling 1.75 ERA, struck out 84 batters, and held a 1.13 WHIP. His ability to dominate late-inning situations helped the Padres solidify their bullpen and make a postseason push.
The Phillies’ bullpen, already bolstered by the addition of former All-Star Jordan Romano, would become one of the league’s best if Scott were added. However, Scott’s market value, projected at four years and $66 million with an annual average of $16.4 million, poses a significant hurdle for Philadelphia.
Phillies’ Interest Sparks Speculation
MLB insider Jon Morosi recently reported that the Phillies were among the teams linked to Scott during the Winter Meetings, alongside big-market competitors like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays.
“Tanner Scott is the main free-agent arm that I kept hearing about in Dallas,” Morosi said. “The Phillies have the chance to build a truly elite bullpen if they make the move.”
The Dombrowski Dilemma
Despite the buzz, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has downplayed the team’s urgency to sign another high-priced reliever.
“We’re more focused on finding a late-inning right-handed option who doesn’t necessarily have to be a closer,” Dombrowski said. “The traditional closer role has evolved; we’re looking at multiple high-leverage options rather than a singular dominant closer.”
The Phillies already have a balanced bullpen with both left- and right-handed options, making a major financial commitment to Scott unlikely. Additionally, they have internal decisions to make, including whether to re-sign fan favorite Jeff Hoffman, who has expressed interest in returning to Philadelphia.
The Verdict
While the idea of pairing Scott with Romano in the Phillies’ bullpen is tantalizing, the financial implications and organizational priorities make it a difficult move to envision. With other deep-pocketed teams vying for Scott’s services, it seems more likely that the Phillies will focus on value signings or internal options to fortify their pitching staff.
Phillies fans may dream of Scott donning red pinstripes, but the reality is that his price tag may make this star closer a luxury Philadelphia can’t afford.
