Once considered a future star for the Philadelphia Phillies, 28-year-old Spencer Howard is heading overseas to restart his career. Following another tough MLB season, Howard has signed a one-year deal with the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), as reported by Phillies Tailgate on X.
Howard, once the Phillies’ No. 1 prospect, struggled to find success in the majors. In 2024, he split time between the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Guardians, recording a rough 6.21 ERA across nine games. His move to Japan marks an opportunity for a fresh start after years of inconsistency.
A Promising Start That Never Materialized
Drafted 45th overall by the Phillies in 2017, Howard was seen as a future ace. His MLB debut in 2020, during the pandemic-shortened season, exposed issues with arm strength and stamina, as he posted a 5.92 ERA in 24 1/3 innings. The following year was even tougher, and he was traded midseason to the Texas Rangers in a deal involving Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy.
Unfortunately, Howard’s performance with the Rangers didn’t improve. Across two seasons, he recorded a 2-7 record with an 8.37 ERA in 21 games. Subsequent stints with the Yankees, Giants, and Guardians offered little relief, as Howard struggled to find his footing in both the majors and minors.
A New Chapter in Japan
With the Rakuten Golden Eagles, Howard will step into a pivotal role as the team rebuilds following the departure of former star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. The Golden Eagles have not had a winning season since 2021, and Howard’s signing represents a chance for both player and team to turn the page.
Howard joins a growing list of former Phillies players who’ve transitioned to international leagues, including Domonic Brown, Nick Williams, Aaron Altherr, and Cole Irvin. Japan has often been a successful proving ground for players looking to revitalize their careers.
Still just 28, Howard has the potential to rediscover the form that once made him a top prospect. If he can deliver for the Golden Eagles, this move could reignite his baseball journey.
